Introduction

I love traveling and I’m sure you do too. But it’s not always easy to plan a honeymoon that leaves your wallet full of cash and your mind free of worry. Fortunately, there are many ways to save money on your next romantic getaway:

Sign Up for a Travel Rewards Credit Card and Earn Miles

There are a few different types of credit cards that can help you earn miles and points on your honeymoon. The first type is the signup bonus, which offers rewards when you open a new account. These cards usually have an annual fee but offer a large amount of free travel as long as you meet certain spending requirements in the first few months after opening the account.

For example:

  • (For Business Owners) – Chase Ink Business Preferred Card offers 100,000 bonus points after spending $15,000 within three months of opening an account. You’ll just want to be sure if you use this one, that your honeymoon will involve some type of business… like a styled shoot if you’re a photographer! – This card has gotten my husband and I round trip flights to Italy as well as flights to The Ozarks and Colorado for myself in just 6 months!
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred Card offers 50,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 within three months of opening an account.
  • American Express Platinum Card comes with 60K Membership Rewards points (worth $600) after spending $5K in 3 months.

Get an Airline Credit Card and Use It For All of Your Purchases

This is similar to the last topic, but instead of general travel rewards credit card, you can get an airline credit card. I’d recommend doing this if you mainly fly with one airline.

There are many different kinds of airline cards out there, but they’re not all created equal–some offer better rewards than others, so make sure you choose one that suits your needs (and be sure to check out our list of top picks below).

Use your card as often as possible! This means charging everything from groceries and gas to clothes and entertainment on your new travel companion so that every purchase gets you closer to earning free flights or other perks like upgrades or lounge access. But remember to pay off your purchases as you go and ideally pay the card off in full each month to avoid interest fees.

Look Into Travel Insurance for your Honeymoon

Travel insurance is an optional but not-to-be-missed part of your honeymoon planning. The reason it’s optional is because you can usually get the best deals on travel insurance when you purchase it before your trip, which means that if something happens to prevent you from taking off on time or at all, your money won’t be wasted. However, even if nothing happens and everything goes smoothly (which is what we hope for), having coverage can help ease some of the stress around traveling in general–especially if you’re venturing somewhere remote and unfamiliar where medical care may not be readily available.

Travel insurance can also save some serious cash if something goes wrong while abroad: according to one study cited by Moneyish magazine, “one in five Americans who have purchased travel insurance say they’ve used it at least once.”

Check if Your Destination has a Promotion

  • Check the destination’s website. The best way to find out if your destination has a promotion going on is by checking the destination’s official website. You can also ask your travel agent or hotel staff, but they may not know about all of them.
  • Ask the airline about discounts or deals for honeymooners and couples celebrating an anniversary or other special occasion (like birthdays). They might even have flights with extra legroom!

Use Your Points from Hotel Rewards to Get Free Nights at Hotels in the Destination of Your Choice

Leading up to your honeymoon, be sure to consistently book any hotels through a rewards program. Then when you’ve earned enough points, it’s time to cash them in for free rooms!

If you’re like me, you probably have a few loyalty programs already in place. I have a rewards card from my local grocery store and another from my favorite coffee shop. These cards are great for getting discounts on certain items or paying less than full price for others, but they don’t offer much in terms of travel rewards. That’s why it’s important to sign up for a travel-focused program when planning your honeymoon trip.

The more points you earn through your hotel rewards program, the more free nights you can get on your honeymoon. The first step is choosing which hotel or loyalty program will work best for your travel style.

There are several sites that can help guide you through this process: RewardExpert and Rocketmiles have an extensive database of different travel loyalty programs; and TravelPirates offers users access to exclusive deals on flights and hotel stays through its network of partners (though it does cost $25 per year). Of course, there are also plenty of free resources available online–just do some research first!

Use Apps Like Hotel Tonight Instead of Booking Direct to Find Better Deals

Hotel Tonight is a great way to find last minute deals on hotels. You can book rooms for as little as $50, and sometimes even up to 50% off the regular rate. The app is available for both Android and iOS devices, so it’s easy to use whether or not you have an iPhone.

You don’t have to worry about booking a room too early either–you can make reservations up until midnight! If your plans change, simply cancel the reservation within 24 hours of making it (and before checking in) and get your money back.

Look Into Tour Packages as a Way to Save Money on Flights and Hotels

There are a few ways to save money on your honeymoon. One of the easiest is to look into tour packages, which are often a combination of airfare and hotel or airfare, hotel and tours. These can be very affordable and convenient if you’re traveling with children in tow–you don’t have to worry about finding accommodations at each destination or coordinating transportation between stops!

Check Out Sites Like Groupon and Airbnb for Deals on Accommodations

Airbnb is a great way to save money on accommodations. If you’re traveling with your significant other and want to stay somewhere unique, Airbnb has some great options for cheap accommodation. You can also find deals on things like dinner, tours and tickets through Groupon (which we recommend checking out before you travel).

Stay Flexible with Your Honeymoon Travel Dates

Stay flexible with your dates, some places have off-season rates that can save you hundreds of dollars per night!

Weekday travel vs. weekend travel can mean you save money on lodging, but if your vacation days are unpaid, this may or may not offset the extra time you’d need to take off of work.

Conclusion

There are lots of ways to travel hack your honeymoon. Take advantage of credit card bonuses or sign up for new cards, if you’re eligible. You might be able to earn miles that can be used toward flights and hotel stays on your trip.

If you don’t want to deal with the hassle of applying for new credit cards, look into travel insurance instead! It can save money in case anything goes wrong during your trip–and remember: even if it doesn’t go wrong now, there’s always something unexpected happening with air travel these days (i.e., delays).

Check out what promotions are happening at the destination(s) where you want to go so that when booking flights and hotels with points/miles/cash back deals available through those companies’ partners such as Expedia or Orbitz – which often have lower prices than direct booking websites like TripAdvisor.
